POSITION OVERVIEW

Position title: Assistant Researcher

Salary range: The posted UC system-wide salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 13B for the salary range at UCSB. A reasonable estimated full-time rate for this position at 100% time is $85,600 - $101,100 annually. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e. a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Percent time: 40% time

Anticipated start: April 2023 or as soon as is practicable

Position duration: Initial appointment for 1 year, with the options for extension if performance and funding allows

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The chosen candidate will engage in independent research to contribute to our understanding of the Proterozoic fossil record of eukaryotes, with a focus on the taxonomic study of fossil materials, and sample collection and management. This individual will raise external funding in collaboration with Dr. Susannah Porter, and will serve on graduate student committees in the Earth Science Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD in Geological Sciences or related field, and two years of postdoctoral research in paleontology or related field.

Preferred qualifications

Strong command of the Precambrian paleontology literature, and a track record of publishing papers in Precambrian micropaleontology. Expertise in Proterozoic organic-walled microfossil taxonomy, with experience in light and electron scanning microscopy.
